By now we all know the story: Stylish Dayton, Ohio quartet forms; the group mixes some wacky indie-rock elements with some zany manipulation; it’s so intense, so mind-blowing and ridiculous that it’s brilliant; the group puts out some records and blows shit up. Clocking in at just over 14 minutes (!) Electro-Shock for President is more of a naughty teaser than an actual follow-up to the acclaimed full-length Hissing Prigs in Static Couture, but Brainiac uses every second to its fullest, giving a tantalizing glimpse of the sonic trickery and audio mayhem of which it’s capable. While Brainiac is primarily a rock unit that keeps its electronic leanings in the background on most of its recordings, Electro-Shock… brings the bleeps and bloops front and center, resulting in a warped, nearly frightening interpretation of rock n’ roll as played by an android on the brink of a meltdown. Brainiac fought the machine, and it’s hard to tell who won. Get a ringside seat for “Fresh New Eyes,” “Fashion 500” and “Mr. Fingers.”
